Penske will return to Pacific this week showcasing MTU’s ability to deliver on its commitment to the Governmental customer.

Penske will be displaying an MTU 1163 propulsion diesel engine, a Sauer WP5500 compressor, and a model of the MTU12V4000U83 charging unit – as unveiled by Penske in a world first at Pacific two years ago.

The MTU1163 display will be a tangible representation of Penske's capability to deliver relevance to the defence customer via our ability to develop and deliver projects that upgrade, update, and refresh power systems and compressors once installed within defence platforms and applications.

As found in Anzac-class frigates, the Armidale-class patrol boats, the Hobart-class destroyers, and soon, the Hunter-class frigates, future submarine (Attack-class) program, and Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, the 1163, 396, and 4000 series engines – of which the U83 charging unit is a derivative – and WP5500 compressor are significant components of key Australian navy programs.

“The MTU1163 propulsion diesel engine that will be on show at Pacific depicts MTU’s design evolution process as well as its ability to work with its local partners to deliver upgrade, update, and refresh capabilities that capitalise on local application and operational knowledge,” said Roger Gleeson, general manager – defence, Penske .

“The engine on display demonstrates commonality across both current and future applications as it captures the design path of the Anzac-class frigate’s classic (TB83) propulsion diesels through to that of the current Arafura-class engines, and how this path can deliver Life of Type Extension relevant projects, such as the Anzac-class frigates upgraded (TB83E) propulsion diesel engines.

“For example, while the 1163 engine for the Arafura-class will comprise a common rail fuel injection system, both it and the upgraded Anzac-class propulsion diesel engine (TB83E) are controlled and monitored via the same electronic governor, among other improvements.

“Crucially, both the scoping and delivery of the upgrade / update project (12V1163TB83E) were led and delivered by Penske here in Australia, driven by the local operating requirement of the customer and implementing the local application knowledge of Penske.

“This process also demonstrated the original equipment manufacturer’s (MTU Friedrichshafen) ability to support these types of projects, while retaining design authority.

“Following the unveiling of the MTU U83 submarine charging unit last show, the U83 model on display is a direct representation of the MTU charging unit which has, excitingly, now been down-selected for Australia’s future submarine (Attack-class) program.

“The Sauer WP5500 compressor, which has compatibility with multiple platforms – current and future – in the Royal Australian Navy, will be on show as well demonstrating the latest in relevant and innovative compressor technologies.”
